abstract
We investigate the eigenvalue distribution of the hermitian Wilson-Dirac
operator on quenched gauge confgurations for the standard plaquette
action and a renormalization group improved action at several lattice
spacings in the range $1/a\simeq 1-2$GeV. We find that for the domain-wall
height $M$ employed in previous simulations the spectral density at zero
in the plaquette gauge action is always non-zero and behaves as
$e^{-c/\sqrt{a}}$, confirming the result by R.~Edwards {\it et al}.
A similar scaling behavior is found for the RG-improved action, but its
magnitude is reduced by roughly an order of magnitude.
We discuss implications and relations of these results with the chiral
properties of domain-wall QCD explored with axial vector Ward identities.
