Local Transport Arrangements

To minimize cost and hassles, all local transportation for the duration of the conference (between the Bangalore airport and the hotels, between the hotels and the J.N. Tata Seminar complex, and excursion) will be covered by the registration fee, and arranged by us through a travel agency. Pre-paid taxi services are available from the airport, and can be arranged from the hotels (advisable if you do not want to argue with the driver later). The common mode of transport in Bangalore is a three-wheeler autorickshaw, but they often bargain for the price (particularly with foreigners) instead of running according to the meter.

Renting Cars

It is possible to rent cars for personal use for a few hours to several days. For those unfamiliar with the chaos of Indian roads and traffic, as well as the language, it is not advisable to drive on their own. The convenient option is to rent the car with a chauffeur. Rather most of the car rental companies would lend their cars only with this option; they do not have to worry about getting their car back and the tourists do not have to worry about car insurance. The rental rates can be fixed by hours or by distance or by days. Typically it comes to about US $20 per day, for the car and the chauffeur together. For travels covering several days, the chauffeur has to be given a daily allowance for food and he often sleeps in the car (not losing the car is more important than comfort). The cars come both with and without air-conditioning, and they can carry upto 5 passengers (in addition to the chauffeur).

Other Links

The Conference venue page has general information about the region. Participating hotels can assist with travels in and around Bangalore. Thomas Cook travel agency has a branch on the IISc campus.

Some useful links to various travel services are provided on the travel services page. Additional tourist information links are provided on the local information page. Indian participants will also offer their help on individual basis. The conference organisers, however, cannot take responsibility for these travel arrangements.
