LOS ALAMOS STRATEGIC STUDIES PROGRAM

(Developing the next generation of broad strategic thinkers)

GOALS OF THE PROGRAM

The purpose of this program is to develop a cadre of broad strategic thinkers who are familiar with, and understand, the diversity of security challenges to the US and to the International community.

The program consists of two activities:

The seminar series brings to Los Alamos nationally and internationally recognized speakers to examine different aspects of security, development, and human issues.

These seminars are typically held on wednesdays between 3.30 - 5.00 pm.

Past and future talks can be viewed at (LANL internal only) International Security in the New Millennium -- IS21.

The workshops aim to bring together some of the leading experts on threats to national and international security to provide a comprehensive and global overview on a given theme. Each workshop examines about 4-5 sub-topics in depth. The format is to have 2-5 experts on each sub-topic present lectures representing different view points. The lectures are followed by a moderated panel discussion with the aim of developing consensus on main issues and avenues for future research and co-operation. We make an attempt to have the speakers and the "students" spend as much time together in discussion.

The last day of the five day workshop is devoted to playing a game scenario that reflects the knowledge gained from the lectures and requires role playing. The object of this exercise is to confront technology, knowledge, policy, and realities of international organizations and governments, and develop an understanding of how such events play out in real life. Emphasis is given to integrating the various sub-modules into a cohesive whole through discussions and the game scenario.

Based on this workshop we will prepare a proceedings which will cover the talks and can serve as a resource for LANL staff and for teachers and students at other institutions in the US. The past and planned workshops are
