Looking ahead to the next decade and imagining the landscape of astronomy in 2020, it is clear that surveys, local and cosmological, large and small, plus extensive follow-up projects, will play a key role. In fact, one might call the next two decades the "Era of Great Surveys". Surveys have long had a critical role in astronomy, from the pioneering Palomar Sky Surveys to the high-energy all-sky surveys from various satellites. Recently, the remarkable success of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey has kicked off a new generation of astrophysically and cosmologically motivated surveys that are widely accessible not only to researchers, but also to the public.

This workshop is aimed at building upon the wide interest in astronomical surveys in the community. This meeting will bring together the key workers in the field to exchange ideas, identify areas of cooperation, and discuss plans for the future. The workshop will be held at the historic La Fonda Hotel, located centrally in the Plaza area of downtown Santa Fe.

There are a number of more or less specialized scientific topics relevant to this meeting. The workshop will focus as well on larger unifying themes, such as, (i) getting science from surveys, (ii) survey and follow-up strategies, (iii) transient identification and notification, (iv) key technologies, (v) data management and mining, (vi) theory and modeling, and (vii) coordination between surveys.

The workshop is sponsored primarily by the Astrophysics and Cosmology Center (ACCent) -- a focus-activity center within the Los Alamos National Laboratory's Institute for Advanced Studies, one of five joint LANL-academia institutes operating under the umbrella of the National Security Education Center at Los Alamos. The IAS promotes and enhances collaborations between LANL and three New Mexico universities (NMSU, NMT, UNM) and promotes strategic connections with the national and international scientific community its thrust areas.
