Although I continue my research on nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and field theory (see Research Interests on my home page), I am no longer associated with the particular research project described below. This web page exists for archival purposes only and has not been updated since 1998.
This is the home page of the Nonequilibrium Working Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The objective of the Working Group is to bring together LANL researchers with diverse interests and expertise in order to launch a unified research effort in nonequilibrium phenomena. Since October 1997 the Working Group has formed part of a new Lab-funded thrust in nonequilibrium science which will run for 5 years.
The activities of the Working Group are coordinated by Alan Bishop, Fred Cooper, Salman Habib (contact person regarding group activities), and Emil Mottola. The full Working Group mailing list may be found here. Members are invited to suggest topics for discussion as well as names of external and internal speakers.
The general areas of interest can be classified into three broad, overlapping classes, brief summaries of which are given below.
The Working Group holds regular meetings and there is an external visitor program to keep abreast of the latest developments and to identify the most fruitful directions of research given the expertise already present at LANL.
George Baker coordinated a previous effort on multi-scale phenomena and took meticulous notes at the seminars: the ones directly relevant to nonequilibrium phenomena are available in postscript format. George has kindly consented to do the same for the Working Group seminars and his notes, again in postscript format, are available (see below).
The Working Group sponsors workshops and conferences in areas relevant to its research thrust in nonequilibrium phenomena.
