LANL SDSS-II FAQ

  1. How does being a member of the LANL SDSS Team (LST) help me?
Public SDSS data can be accessed and used without being a member of the LST. LST membership basically enables two things:
    (i) Access to non-public data
(ii) Initiation of, and participation in, SDSS collaboration-wide projects.
  2. What are my main responsibilities as a member of the LST?
Signing on to the LST membership form means that you have understood your responsibilities as a member of the SDSS-II collaboration as outlined in the Principles of Operation and the Publications Policy. SDSS-II is a very large international collaboration with over 300 participants, therefore it is important to follow collaboration guidelines; failure to do so can lead to loss of data rights. Some of the salient points are:
    (i) All new projects must be announced to the collaboration and interested people within the collaboration allowed to participate.
(ii) Competition with an already announced project is not allowed, be aware of the SDSS project list.
(iii) Non-public SDSS data must not be released to anyone outside the collaboration.
(iv) Prospective papers using SDSS data must be posted to the Collaboration Publications website at least 3 weeks before submission to any public forum.
    (v) All proposals associated with SDSS science to be sent out for external funding (more than $30K) must first be vetted by the LST.
  3. What is the SDSS-II management structure?
The SDSS is overseen by the Advisory Council (AC) while day-to-day operation is the responsibility of the Management Committee, consisting of the Project Director (Rich Kron), Project Manager (Bill Boroski), Project Scientist (Jim Gunn), and Project Spokesperson (David Weinberg). The Collaboration Council (CoCo) advises the Spokesperson on matters of policy and data rights and includes representatives from each of the SDSS institutions. LANL is represented by Salman Habib (AC) and J. Allyn Smith (CoCo).
  4. Who should I ask if I have questions related to SDSS-II collaboration policy?
The LST point of contact (PoC) and the LANL member on the Collaboration Council are the first people to go to. Currently Salman Habib (T-8) is the LST PoC and J. Allyn Smith (ISR-4) is the CoCo representative.
